Missing Tools

We can't find the Campy crown race remover or the big grease gun that takes the cylinder cartridges. Has anyone seen them?

National Highway Taffic Safety Administration

Here is a safety video put out by the man. Even with all my resentment of beuracratic organizations, I can't say I disagree with anything in this peice. Good stuff.

Heidi's Bike

One of my favorite custom bikes to leave our shop is Heidi's bike. This bike was built last year for a good customer of ours. I think it came out beautifully. It has a Nexus 7 speed hub and a Columbus cyclocross fork. Women's Brooks Pro saddle... I don't think I can go on.

Practical Guide to Cycle Touring

Freedom is a concept foriegn to the settled and civilized. Nations, borders, corporations only know harsh structure, stagnation, and forced hierarchy. Why do we cling to the idea of freedom at this late hour? I say the nomad is still in us somewhere, repressed, but looking for a way out. We humans were wanderers for much longer than this social experiment of rising and falling empires has played out.

The nomad has the clear vision to discern things in this life of significance. His gods live with him in the field. Food, water, air, fire, shelter, and of course, his mount. Luckily these things can still be found in abundance. What's left but to find a mount worthy of deification and wander while you still can?

Irrelevance is Inevitable on the Interweb

Separated Bike Lanes

I have very mixed feelings about this issue. My specific concerns are about curb cuts at driveways and businesses and the assumption by drivers, once these bike lanes are constructed, that cyclists don't have a right to the roadway and that we should be limited to these bike lanes. I will continue to ride my bike from where I am to where I need to go no matter how the road is redesigned. A painted bike lane is, at least, a reminder to other road users that we have every right to be there. Here is an alternate view using NYC as a model.

Car Therapy

The car therapist picks up the client at a prearranged meeting place and drives the car during the session. Traditionally, the therapist drives more or less at random for 50 minutes, while the client discusses whatever is uppermost in their mind. These days, when ecology is more important than ever, therapists usually take their clients to do errands. Many auto therapists are switching to high mileage and hybrid vehicles.Car therapy works because most people are more comfortable talking while seated side by side, rather than face to face. This physical arrangement also allows the therapist to align with the client. Client and therapist are both looking down the road to recovery.

Winter Glory

In case you weren't aware, we're getting hammered with snow. I love riding in the deep snow but I don't think other road users appreciate it. In these extreme conditions I tend to get a bit squirrely and I imagine it isn't confidence inspiring for someone trying to pass me. The road get's narrow, too.

The carnage.

Cat Crunchers

Rob has been at it again. These two totally custom Cat Crunchers came off the line this week. The mens has a used 1 1/8 threaded mountain fork with cantilever brakes on the front and coaster brake on the rear. 26 inch (559) wheels and a square taper sealed cartridge bottom bracket (a really cool little bb converter helped achieve this update). Rob extended the seat post so it will accomodate a taller rider too. We built three of these a couple years ago and they were one of my favorite styles of customs we have done. We have three built in the shop now, all are a variation on the Cat Cruncher theme. Come check them out or email for more information!

Blogtech Update

This is not technically a bike technology related post but you may find it interesting, technically speaking. I had a very productive meeting with our web master last night. He rules, by the way. We added a couple of features you might appreciate.

I added a link to our RSS feed to make it possible to subscribe to our blog with your favorite feed aggregater. If this sounds like a bunch of gibberish to you check out this page for a thorough description. A site feed is a way to compile all the regularly updated content you like from multiple sites on one page. The one stop shopping is nice and anything new is automatically added to your pile of stuff for you to peruse.

We added a link or 'blogroll' section to our sidebar and I'll be adding some tasty gibblets to this list as we march ever forward. You can find the link to the feed there and also a easy link for contributors to log in and post. If there is any juicy stuff you all want to contribute, contact us or leave a comment on this post.

Lastly we added a pluggin to our software that allows us to post video from youtube. I'm going to post something here as a test. If you are a contributor and you want to use this function, contact me and I'll give you the lowdown. If you want to put a video in a comment, you can just cut and paste the embed code found on the youtube page into the comment feild. Oooooo what fun!
