YOUTH PROGRAMS

YOUTH SHOP

Youth Shop is a weekly drop-in time for young people to work on bikes.

Attendees can bring in their bike to repair, or work with a mechanic to fix up a bike they take home. While all are welcome, this is primarily a space for youth whose family would qualify for our Everybody Bikes program.

Youth Shop is open to youth ages 12 to 18. We welcome younger kids who would benefit from this program if they are accompanied by a parent or older sibling, and are able to interact respectfully with other people, tools, and bikes. We work with partner organizations to encourage participation from youth with social and economic barriers.

Time: Thursdays from 3:30-5:30pm, May through October.

Location: OSH Community Workshop,  664 Riverside Ave. You can also come through the main entrance at 331 North Winooski Ave and ask staff for directions to the Community Workshop.

Kids' Bike Bonanzas

Everyone deserves the joy, empowerment, and health that bicycles provide.Old Spokes Home's Bike Bonanzas give bikes to kids who would be eligible for our Everybody Bikes program and who likely would not have one of their own otherwise.

Bikes are beyond the budget of many Vermont families. We believe that riding a bike is a life skill and source of joy that all kids should be able to access. The younger someone starts riding a bike, the more likely they are to keep riding throughout their life, increasing health, mobility, opportunity, and JOY.

Youth Apprenticeship

This program, a long-standing partnership with Spectrum Youth and Family Services, is at the core of our Old Spokes Home mission.

Most of the first week was spent learning the basics, slowly working up to performing professional-grade check-overs and beginning refurbs of the group’s own new rides. The process of taking something old, rusty, and unusable , and turning it into something new and functional brings a special meaning to the work we do. Through the difficult, and often never-ending, process of restoring their old bikes, the group realized the value and transferable nature of the skills they were learning.
